Custom Machining of Steel Adjustment Screws with a Cast Iron Nut used in a Steel Mill

An industrial customer contracted Denver Machine Shop to manufacture a set of very large replacement “adjusting screws” to 1952 blue print specifications. This part, as shown, is used for adjusting a huge machine which manufactures steel tubes. Using 4140 alloy steel for the shaft and cast iron for the nut, the unit was turned and milled on our state of the art Vertical CNC Mill and CNC Lathe machines. A Tight tolerance of ±0.0005″ was held throughout. The shaft was threaded with a #1 pitch buttress thread. After quench and tempering the screws for hardness, and polishing the threads 32 RMS finish, the unit was installed at the client’s manufacturing plant, on site in Colorado. Turnaround time for this project was rushed to 3 weeks.

The finished shaft dimensions were 5 ft. long x 8 in. in diameter. Each part weighed about 350 lbs. Q & A inspection included hardness testing, thread to thread clearance and functionality, and dimensional inspection. Denver Machine is a reliable source for high quality replacement parts, rebuilds, and custom manufacturing.
